Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Tuesday noted that “the daily Israeli escalation is targeting the depth of residential areas, civilians and even ambulances and journalists.”
Israel is “not only violating U.N. resolution 1701 but also all rules of engagement,” Berri added, during a meeting in Ain el-Tineh with U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who was accompanied by UNIFIL chief Aroldo Lazaro and U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka.
The U.N. delegation also met with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who reiterated his call for the international community to “halt the Israeli aggression” against Lebanon.
“We are advocates of permanent stability and we call for a permanent peaceful solution, but in return we are receiving warnings through international envoys about a war on Lebanon,” Mikati added.
He also reiterated “Lebanon’s readiness to engage in negotiations to achieve a long-term stability process in south Lebanon and on the northern border of occupied Palestine,” noting that Lebanon is willing to “abide by U.N. resolutions, the (1949) Armistice Agreement and Resolution 1701.”
