Mikati: Hezbollah enjoys rationality and wisdom
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Tuesday stressed that a ceasefire in Gaza would be the cornerstone for the beginning of all solutions in the region.
“Hezbollah enjoys rationality and wisdom and it has said that it puts the Lebanese interest above any other interest,” Mikati said in remarks to Al-Jazeera television.
“Our choice is diplomatic and we want permanent stability on the border with Israel. We are committed to the U.N. resolutions on Lebanon and we respect them all,” the premier added.
Calling on the international community to “press Israel to cease fire in order to reach a solution based on the two-state choice and establishing stability,” Mikati noted that “the solution lies in fully implementing Resolution 1701, halting the Israeli aggression and consolidating calm and stability on the border.”
Since the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip erupted on October 7, the Israel-Lebanon border has seen near-daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces.
Violence on the border since October 7 has killed 190 people in Lebanon, including more than 140 Hezbollah fighters and over 20 civilians including three journalists, according to an AFP tally.
In Israel's north, at least 15 people, including nine soldiers, have been killed, according to Israeli authorities.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006.
