Eight people were killed Tuesday after gas cylinders leaked and triggered a fire at the Pizza Secrets restaurant in Beirut's Beshara al-Khoury area.
The Beirut Fire Brigade said the eight victims suffocated to death inside the restaurant and that two other people were injured.
The National News Agency identified one of the dead as Imad Ahmad Choucair, saying he hailed from the southern town of Mays al-Jabal.
The restaurant is part of the Ghannajeh building, which houses a number of state administrations, most notably the Finance Ministry’s Revenues Directorate and the National Authority of the Litani River.
“The Criminal Evidence Bureau will probe the incident … and the judiciary will certainly unveil the culprit,” caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said after inspecting the site.
MPs Paula Yacoubian, Melhem Khalaf and Ibrahim Mneimneh also inspected the scene, with the latter saying that “the place lacked public safety requirements” and urging a “transparent probe” into the incident.
