Druze leader Walid Jumblat has noted that Hezbollah’s response to the assassination of the commander Fouad Shukur was “very calculated.”
“Hezbollah’s penetration of the Israeli defenses is an important matter,” Jumblat added, in an interview on Qatar’s al-Arabi TV.
“The theory of neutrality is wrong and we cannot keep Lebanon away from what’s happening in the region,” the former Progressive Socialist Party chief went on to say.
He added that “self-defense, whether by the state or by an armed faction like Hezbollah, is a legitimate right.”
“If the United States were serious, it would have stopped the aggression on Gaza,” Jumblat said, adding that “U.S. President Joe Biden is sending (Secretary of State Antony) Blinken to the region to gain time.”
“Why doesn’t Israel withdraw to a certain line like Hezbollah is being asked to and why should conditions only be imposed on us?” Jumblat wondered.
He added that “after the aggression on Gaza,” he sided with “those who defend Lebanon and confront Israel,” in reference to Hezbollah.
Separately, Jumblat said “dialogue with the Syrian regime is necessary to resolve the issue of the displaced Syrians in Lebanon.”
