Fresh from winning six Grammy awards barely a week ago, soul diva Adele could sweep up more prizes at Tuesday's Brit awards.
Londoner Adele, who has been out of action since October for throat surgery, is in the running for best British Single for "Someone Like You," British Female Solo Artist and Mastercard British Album of the Year for "21."
But in the single and album categories, the global megastar goes head to head with singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, who has shot to fame in the past year with single 'The A Team' and the album '+'.
Since her first album '19' in 2008, Adele has sold millions of albums worldwide. Her follow up '21' topped charts in Britain, the U.S. Billboard 200, and lists in other countries including Canada, Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Sheeran, meanwhile, has spent those years struggling to make it as a musician since moving to London at age 16 to build up his skills by playing as many gigs as he could.
Adele made a triumphant return to the stage at the Grammys in Los Angeles on February 12, wowing a star-studded audience with a storming rendition of 'Rolling in the Deep' as she collected six awards, equaling Beyonce's record for a female artist.
But she has a mixed record in the Brits, having failed to secure a trophy since her debut success in winning the Critics Choice award in 2008. The following year she was nominated in three categories but lost out in all of them.
The toughest fight in this year's competition is for British Single, with Adele's 'Someone Like You' and Ed Sheeran's 'The A Team' up against eight others nominees, including songs by JLS, Jessie J and Pixie Lott.
'Wherever You Are', the single by Gareth Malone's choir of Military Wives which grabbed the Christmas number one chart position, is also up for the gong.
In the British Album category, Adele's '21' and Sheeran's '+' compete with Coldplay's 'Mylo Xyloto', Florence and the Machine's 'Ceremonials' and PJ Harvey's 'Let England Shake'.
While Adele may win a maximum of three awards, Sheeran could take four trophies home from Monday night's ceremony at the O2 Arena.
In addition to the British Single and Album sections, he is a contender for British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act, where his rivals are Anna Calvi, Emeli Sande, Jessie J and The Vaccines.
Meanwhile, Blur are set to perform five songs at the ceremony as they receive an outstanding contribution award.
