Geagea: Some of Hochstein's proposals breach sovereignty, govt. must implement 1559

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Wednesday called on the government to “declare its commitement to U.N. resolutions, especially 1559, to avoid a worse situation,” while noting that some of U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein’s proposals “encroach on Lebanese sovereignty.”

“The ongoing war in Lebanon is between Israel and Iran,” Geagea added in an interview with Al-Arabiya, urging the government to “implement resolutions 1559, 1680 and 1701 instead of merely committing to them.”

Speaker Nabih Berri and caretaker PM Najib Mikati “do not want to implement resolutions 1559 and 1680” and are trying to maneuver in “dealing with Resolution 1701,” the LF leader charged.

“There is no time for maneuvers in the implementation of U.N. resolutions and we must implement the terms of the Taif Agreement. Lebanon is before a moment of truth and we need a brave and clear stance,” Geagea said.

Noting that Berri and Mikati “do not want to ask Hezbollah that its weapons be removed,” the LF leader revealed that he had asked the premier months ago to “be frank with Hezbollah and warn it of a coming war.”

“Had the Lebanese Army been on the border, Israel would not have attacked Lebanon,” Geagea suggested.
