Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Monday called on the “silent” international community to address “the Israeli enemy’s continued aggression against Lebanon and its crimes of killing and destruction.”
Mikati voiced his remarks in meetings with the ambassadors of the U.N. Security Council’s permanent members -- the U.S., the UK, France, Russia and China. He also met with the EU’s ambassador to Lebanon.
“The Lebanese government has openly declared its commitment to Resolution 1701 and its determination to boost the army’s presence in the south, welcoming all the stances that called for a ceasefire, but the Israeli enemy turned against all the suggested solutions and continued its war crimes in the various Lebanese regions, to the extent of targeting archaeological sites, which in itself is an additional crime against humanity that must be confronted and stopped,” Mikati added.
“We reiterate our call for exerting pressure to halt the aggression, to pave the way for discussing the means leading to the literal implementation of Resolution 1701, as it was adopted, without any additions or interpretations,” the premier went on to say.
Mikati also called for pressing Israel to stop targeting civilians and medical and rescue crews.
