Netanyahu approves Lebanon deal 'in principle', truce possible within 2 days

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the emerging ceasefire deal with Hezbollah “in principle” during a security consultation with Israeli officials Sunday night, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

Israel still has reservations over some details of the agreement, which were expected to be transmitted to the Lebanese government on Monday, the source said.

Those and other details are still being negotiated and multiple sources stressed that the agreement will not be final until all issues are resolved.

A ceasefire agreement will also need to be approved by the Israeli cabinet, which has not yet occurred.

Sources familiar with the negotiations told CNN talks appear to be moving positively toward an agreement, but acknowledged that as Israel and Hezbollah continue to trade fire, one misstep could upend the talks.

Israeli newspaper Maariv meanwhile quoted informed officials as saying that “an agreement with Lebanon may be signed during the weekend and perhaps before that.”

The Israel Hayom daily for its part quoted Israeli officials as saying that the settlement with Lebanon “will be completed within two or three days should no surprises arise.”

Ain el-Tineh sources had told Al-Jadeed television on Monday that “all the obstacles in the ceasefire negotiations file will be resolved and the days will prove this.”

Israel's Channel 14 meanwhile said that “it has been agreed that France will join the monitoring mechanism for the intended agreement with Lebanon and further progress in the negotiations is expected in the coming hours.”

Sources told Sky News Arabia that "Israel has agreed to the formation of a five-member committee headed by Washington to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement."

"The five-member committee will comprise the United States, France, Lebanon, Israel the and UNIFIL force," the sources added.

"The agreement stipulates a gradual Israeli withdrawal within 60 days to ensure the deployment of the Lebanese Army," the sources said.
