Israel strikes buildings in south Lebanon after evacuation warnings

The Israeli military said it had launched a series of strikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon on Thursday, shortly after issuing evacuation warnings to residents in parts of the area.

"The IDF (Israeli army) has begun a series of strikes on Hezbollah military targets in southern Lebanon," the military said.

The strikes followed evacuation warnings issued by the military to residents of four buildings in four southern towns -- al-Taybeh, Tayr Debba, Aita al-Jabal and Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh.

Israeli army Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee claimed that the buildings contained Hezbollah infrastructure, telling residents to stay at least 500 meters away from them.

The Israeli army “will in the near future attack military infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah across south Lebanon in order to address the prohibited attempts that Hezbollah is making to rebuild its activities in the region,” Adraee said.

"We will not allow Hezbollah to rearm themselves, to recover, build back up its strength, to threaten the state of Israel," Israeli government spokeswoman Shosh Bedrosian told reporters, accusing the group of "continuous terrorist activities."
