Bassil demands open parliamentary hearing to question govt. over key files

Free Patriotic Movement leader Jebran Bassil has called for a public parliamentary session to question the government regarding the war, Hezbollah's weapons, and the U.S.-sponsored framework agreement with Israel.

Bassil urged Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to schedule a public session to question the government and demanded transparency regarding the framework agreement.

He argued that the government must present to Parliament any undisclosed documents regarding the agreement, especially since Israeli officials are stating that they will not withdraw from occupied territories in south Lebanon.

Bassil said that the opposition holds a detailed 57-point file on the government's "failures" and has formally questioned the cabinet regarding Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's flagrant "constitutional violation" in preventing Defense Minister Michel Menassa from speaking in Parliament during a session that passed the general amnesty bill.

The law replaced death sentences with long prison terms, reducing life sentences, and freeing some convicted militants and drug dealers. It largely benefits Sunni Islamist prisoners, including firebrand cleric Ahmad al-Assir, by reducing sentences for killing Lebanese troops.

Bassil said the FPM is "seriously considering" filing an appeal against the law.
