If Lebanon and Israel fail to agree on a new pilot zone in south Lebanon, Washington will designate the aforementioned zone, U.S. General Joseph Clearfield told Lebanese officials during his latest visit to Beirut, according to a senior Lebanese official.
The Lebanese official spoke to al-Joumhouria newspaper in remarks published Thursday.
The framework agreement reached in June calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah, a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of the Lebanese Army to the region, starting in "pilot zones".
Despite a weeks-long lull in fighting, Israel has kept up intermittent strikes and heavy demolition operations in south Lebanon.
Its forces are operating in a strip of territory around 10 kilometers deep inside the Lebanese border.
