Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stated on Monday that his party will not “stoop so low as to respond to some thugs” who have recently criticized his positions on Syria.
He said in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine: “Such slogans only reflect their political bankruptcy and their claims of defiance are really aimed at achieving Israeli goals.”
He added that he will soon make some revelations that will uncover this activity.
The MP made his remarks in reference to the Baath party that staged a demonstration on Sunday in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
During the rally, a Baath supporter burned posters of Jumblat and slammed Qatar and Saudi Arabia’s critical positions of the Syrian regime.
Jumblat continued: “The civilized demonstrations we have staged calmly reflect our support of the Syrian people in their plight, while the rallies that were held by thugs only reflect the conduct of the people they are demonstrating for.”
On this note, he remarked: “Have some sides deliberately forgotten that late Syrian President Hafez Assad did not recognize Palestine as bordering Syria?”
He implemented this position through Syrian history books that failed to mention Palestine, added the PSP leader.
“Doesn’t such action fall in line with the Zionist refusal to recognize Palestine?” he asked.
“Can we forget that in 1966, when he was still Syria’s defense minister, Hafez Assad had imprisoned the national symbol of Palestine Yasser Arafat?” asked Jumblat.
“We will respond to the Baath accusations against us by returning to historic events in the Arab-Israeli conflict and the party’s repeated attempts to suppress the Palestinians’ national will,” he added.
The Druze leader said that he will reveal these events on a weekly basis.
