U.S. ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly held a meeting on Wednesday with Prime Minister Najib Miqati at the Grand Serail.
The two discussed the local “political and security situation”, and the bilateral ties between the United States and Lebanon, according to a statement issued by the embassy.
Connelly reiterated her country’s commitment to Lebanon’s “stability, sovereignty, and independence.”
The U.S. diplomat also tackled with Miqati the recent developments in Syria.
Connelly expressed concerns that the crisis in the neighboring country might cause “instability in Lebanon.”
On Tuesday, the ambassador encouraged Lebanese authorities to provide the humanitarian needs of all Syrian refugees, including dissenters and deserters.
Following talks with Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, Connelly “recognized Lebanon’s efforts to provide assistance to Syrians fleeing the violence in their country."
More than 1,500 Syrians, mainly women and children, have crossed into Lebanon in recent days, fleeing the violence in the central flashpoint province of Homs.
According to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, 7,058 Syrians have registered in Lebanon as refugees but that number is expected to rise with the new influx of arrivals.
