A dispute between President Michel Suleiman and ministers loyal to Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun, forced the president to wrap up the session held at the Baabda Palace on Wednesday, As Safir newspaper reported.
Change and Reform bloc ministers called on renewing three months the mandate for head of the Center for Educational Research and Development Leila Fayyad, while Suleiman insisted on renewing another year for her, on Thursday.
“We are not objecting on the person, but we want to preserve the mechanism of appointments regarding this post,” the ministers loyal to Aoun stressed.
When Suleiman inquired Education Minister Hassan Diab if it was possible for the ministry to apply the mechanism of the appointments on only a three-month period to select the qualified person, he ruled out the option.
Thus, the president insisted on renewing for Fayyad for another year, which provoked the ministers of Aoun.
Suleiman then adjourned the session in an attempt to avoid escalating the tension.
Aoun and Suleiman had been at loggerheads over the appointment of civil servants in posts reserved for Christians. The main point of contention is the head of the Higher Judicial Council.
