Three students were killed and seven others injured on Saturday when part of a cliff collapsed at the Bhanine school in the northern Minieh-Dinniyeh district, the National News Agency reported.
NNA identified the dead as Abdul Rahman al-Siddiq, 16, Osama Zreiqa, 18, and 8-year-old Ahmed al-Rifai.
The incident also destroyed a small wall in the playground of the school.
Al-Minyeh MPs Ahmed Fatfat, Kazem Khair Eddine and Qassem Abdul Aziz said in a statement that the authorities should swiftly investigate the accident.
“The cabinet should establish a Disaster Management Authority…” the statement said.
They urged Education Minister Hassan Diab to swiftly act, holding him responsible for any similar disasters in schools.
Also Saturday, the wall of a church in the Metn district town of Atshana collapsed by a rain-triggered mudslide, NNA said.
The incident damaged a Mercedes and a BMW parked near the wall, NNA added.
President Michel Suleiman called for an investigation to find out the causes of the accident.
The collapse of a building in Beirut’s Ashrafiyeh neighborhood on January 15 that killed 27 people, has sparked fears in Lebanon of more tragedies.
The widespread anger led to a government decision to dismantle the metal bridge in Jal el-Dib that links Beirut with Jounieh and the North after fears that it could also collapse.
But last week, one person was killed and seven people were injured when a building under construction collapsed in the coastal town of Tabarja, north of Beirut.
