Three "terrorists" and a member of Syria's security forces were killed in a clash in a district of Damascus on Monday, state television said.
"Three terrorists were killed and a fourth was arrested in the fighting between security forces and an armed terrorist gang sheltered in a house of a residential district," it said.
The report said one member of the security forces was also killed and three others were wounded.
Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said earlier that at least 18 security troops were wounded in fighting with rebels before dawn in the upscale and heavily guarded Mazzeh neighborhood.
The fighting in western Damascus, with residents and activists reporting blasts and heavy exchanges of gunfire, was the heaviest in the capital since a revolt against President Bashar Assad's regime erupted a year ago, he said.
The authorities refer to anti-regime fighters as armed terrorist gangs.
