A list backed by the March 14 forces, the Progressive Socialist Party and the Jamaa Islamiya won all five seats in the by-elections of the Beirut Order of Engineers and Architects held on Sunday.
By claiming all five seats, the aforementioned coalition seized the majority on the council. The March 8 forces only needed to win one seat in order to retain their majority.
The triumphant Syndical Action list comprised George al-Feghali (4,642 votes), Jahida Itani (4,710 votes), Michel Matta (4,576 votes), Marwan Sharrouf (4,573 votes) and Mughir Senjabeh (4,620 votes).
Some 9,824 engineers and architects out of 27,000 eligible members -- who had paid their annual subscription fees -- took part in the heated election.
Amid normal security measures taken by the Internal Security Forces, the vote did not witness any incident.
