Beirut Lawyers Hold Strike to Protest Vacant HJC Head Post

Beirut lawyers observed a one-day strike on Monday to protest the procrastination in the appointment of the head of the Higher Judicial Council.

The lawyers did not attend court proceedings at the Beirut Justice Palace which only witnessed the presence of the prosecutors, defendants and witnesses that could attend private hearings in the absence of their attorneys.

The strike came upon the request of the heads of the Beirut and Tripoli Bar Associations respectively Nuhad Jabr and Bassam al-Dayeh.

Both Jabr and al-Dayeh announced last week that the suspension of work was a first step that would be followed by escalatory measures if the cabinet does not appoint the HJC’s head.

Differences between President Michel Suleiman and Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun have prevented the cabinet from making the appointment.

Jabr also said Monday that if the government fails to make the appointment on Wednesday, both Bar Associations will hold a meeting to decide on the next steps.
