The oil sector announced a three-day general strike next week to press the government to meet the demands of gas station owners and fuel distributors.
The head of the Association of Petroleum Importing Companies Maroun Shammas reiterated on Monday the request to increase their royalties from a surcharge on the transfer of oil-related material to 7.5 percent.
He said a delegation will hold talks with President Michel Suleiman on the issue on Tuesday.
The head of gas station owners Sami Brax also said the planned strike on April 2-4 comes following the government’s failure to meet their request after the strike they held on March 15.
During the last strike, gas stations stopped pumping fuel and around 100 oil tank trucks parked on the Emile Lahoud highway from the Sayyad roundabout all the way to the ministry headquarters and Karantina.
Brax had warned that the measures will remain open-ended if they don’t reach their objectives.
Experts have warned that the prices of gasoline could reach up to LL40,000 per 20 liters if oil prices continue to rise internationally.
