U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly on Monday discussed with Prime Minister Najib Miqati last week’s visit to Lebanon by a U.N. electoral assistance team.
“The team of experts were here to examine what possible assistance may be extended to Lebanon in line with the initial preparations for the forthcoming elections,” said Plumbly after the meeting at the Grand Serail.
Plumbly said he informed the premier about his visit to New York last week where he “briefed the U.N. Security Council members on the situation in Lebanon in relation to the developments related to the implementation of (U.N. Security Council) Resolution 1701.”
“Security Council members showed interest in the situation in Lebanon and the progress made in the implementation of the resolution. They also noted the present calm along the Blue Line and in south Lebanon,” the U.N. official added.
The two men also discussed the impact of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon.
“I said there was appreciation in New York for the role that Lebanon has played in welcoming and hosting many displaced Syrian people, in particular the role the Prime Minister and the Higher Relief Council have played in that regard,” said Plumbly after the talks.
“There was also appreciation for the Lebanese Government’s efforts to safeguard Lebanon from the negative effects of the Syrian crisis,” he noted.
