Gazan Found Dead after Overnight Border Clash

Palestinian medics on Wednesday found the body of a Palestinian man who was shot dead by Israeli troops overnight east of Gaza City, close to the border, a spokesman said.

"The body of a Palestinian martyr who was killed by Israeli fire was found at dawn to the east of Gaza City's cemetery," said emergency services spokesman Adham Abu Selmiya.

A spokesman for the Israeli military confirmed that troops had fired towards a man crawling towards the border in the same area late on Tuesday.

"At approximately 11:00 pm (2000 GMT), IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldiers identified a suspect crawling towards the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip in a 300-meter zone which is used by terror organizations to plant explosives, to launch attacks on soldiers, and for kidnap attempts," he said.

"The soldiers fired at the suspect and confirmed a hit," he said.

Over the past week, troops in the area had uncovered three explosive devices planted along the border area, he said.

The Israeli army on Sunday said it had shot dead another Palestinian in similar circumstances who had approached the border.

Troops who went to recover the body said they found an AK-47 assault rifle lying beside it, a military statement said.
