Report: Suspicious People Sought to Rent House in Maarab in 2011

Investigators probing Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea’s assassination attempt have found new leads after residents of the town of Maarab informed them that several suspicious people had try to rent an apartment in the area last summer.

A security source told al-Mustaqbal daily published Tuesday the suspicious people, who hail from Maarab, sought to rent a house at the end of last summer but the suspects escaped when the residents informed security officials at Geagea’s residence about them.

They never returned to Maarab after they found out that the security team would question them and ask for their IDs, the source said.

“Such information has its implications and gives you something that you could build on,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Internal Security Forces chief Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi held talks with top officers at the Intelligence Branch over the weekend.

“What happened in Maarab is a serious attempt” to kill Geagea, al-Akhbar daily quoted Rifi as telling them.

The issue “should be dealt with on this basis,” he said.
