Army Launches Investigation into Shaaban’s Death

The Army Command announced on Wednesday that it has launched investigations into the death of al-Jadeed television cameraman Ali Shaaban.

It said in a statement that it has contacted Syria to inquire about the details of the incident in order to determine who should be held responsible for it and prevent similar accidents from taking place in the future.

The army voiced its solidarity with Shaaban’s relatives, saying that it is “keen on ensuring the freedom of the media in covering events taking place at the border with Syria.”

It urged “citizens, journalists in particular, to respect army directions and coordinate their activity with it when dealing with any situation related to danger zones.”

“That will ensure the army’s immediate intervention” should any security incident develop, it explained.

Shaaban was killed on Monday while performing his duty, along with two other colleagues, in the border region of Wadi Khaled.

Reporter Hussein Khreis and cameraman Abed Khayyat, who was lightly wounded in his arm, managed to escape after their car came under a volley of gunfire from the Syrian side of the border.
