Report: Hizbullah Mediated to Prevent Safadi-Miqati Dispute from Spiraling out of Control

Hizbullah has exerted strong efforts to prevent Finance Minister Mohammed Safadi from threatening the fate of the cabinet over his dispute with Premier Najib Miqati, sources close to Safadi said.

The sources told pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday that Hizbullah has tried to appease Safadi over fears that his bickering with Miqati could spill over to the government and threaten its existence.

Safadi slammed Miqati on Thursday for reportedly accusing him of seeking to take commissions in the deal to lease power-generating vessels.

He told LBC’s Kalam al-Nass talk show that the prime minister should remove him from his post if any investigation proved that he had been seeking a commission.

Despite his scathing attack on Miqati, the finance minister said he still supported the premier in the consolidation of civil peace.

“What brings me together with Miqati is the preservation of civil peace and the country (to prevent) any Sunni-Shiite strife,” Safadi stressed. “It is my duty to continue my support to the government.”

Safadi’s sources told al-Hayat that the dispute with Miqati was not political but was the result of the PM’s “personal” attacks on the finance minister.
