Suleiman Awaits Probe to Determine if Attack on Geagea was Attempted Murder
President Michel Suleiman said that the sniper attack on Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea can’t be considered yet an “assassination attempt.”
“Until now, it can only be considered as a shooting and the investigations would reveal if it was an assassination attempt… and I hope it’s not,” Suleiman told reporters in Sydney.
Geagea said that he succeeded in avoiding a sniper attack targeting him on April 4 at his residence in Maarab.
Suleiman assured that the political assassination will not return to Lebanon.
Authorities have launched a probe into the incident.
Concerning the arms of Hizbullah, the president said that the Lebanese should benefit from the resistance’s weapons to defend Lebanon as long as “the (Israeli) occupation remains.”
“We need to set a defense strategy to determine the use of (Hizbullah’s arms) and where they should be pointed at,” Suleiman told reporters.
The arms are a subject of controversy in Lebanon as the March 14 forces demand all parties to become unarmed, while the March 8 forces are holding onto the need of the weapons of Hizbullah to fight Israel.
Suleiman arrived in Australia on Sunday on a week-long visit to meet with the country’s senior officials.
