The March 14 General Secretariat condemned on Monday Energy Minister Jebran Bassil’s recent accusation that the March 14 forces are “preparing to kick off a new wave of political assassinations in Lebanon.”
It warned in a statement “the Lebanese state and all of its constitutional institutions, starting from the presidency, against dealing lightly with the assassination attempt against Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.”
It added that Bassil’s claim has “eliminated all the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and the indictment that it issued against the minister’s allies.”
A few weeks ago, Geagea was the victim of a failed sniper attack.
Bassil told al-Akhbar newspaper in remarks published on Monday: “We fear that a new wave of assassinations are being prepared, similar to what happened in 2005, whereby an assassination took place whenever the March 14 forces sought to approve a matter” linked to the state.
The minister also indirectly questioned Geagea’s story regarding the assassination, saying: “He’s the one who announced the attack and informed the public about it.”
“As long as the details of the case remain linked to what Geagea can provide, we have the right to question it until official accounts proves otherwise,” he added.
The STL, probing the 2005 assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri, accused four Hizbullah members of being involved in the crime.
