Lebanese security authorities will announce the results of the investigation of the sniper attack on Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea in the coming hours, March 14 opposition circles said Tuesday.
The sources told An Nahar that the results of the probe would settle the controversy on whether Geagea escaped an assassination attempt or he was only shot at.
The sources were referring to a statement made by President Michel Suleiman during his visit to Sydney last week that the sniper attack on Geagea couldn’t be considered yet an attempted murder.
“Until now, it can only be considered as a shooting and the investigations would reveal if it was an assassination attempt… and I hope it’s not,” Suleiman told reporters there.
Geagea said earlier this month that he had been shot at twice by snipers as he was walking with bodyguards outside his fortified residence in Maarab, northeast of Beirut.
But the bullets made holes in the wall of the house.
The March 14 opposition described the shots fired at Geagea as a terrorist attack and an attempt to suppress the LF leader.
