The General Labor Confederation announced on Tuesday that it will hold an expanded meeting for syndicates on May 1 on the occasion of Labor Day.
The meeting will be followed with a general strike on May 3 in protest against the rise in gas prices, it stated in a statement after a meeting for its executive office headed by Ghassan Ghosn.
The confederation said: “The weekly rise in gas prices according to the joke that is the weekly update of prices has increased the burden on the transportation sector and raised the prices of food products and consumer goods by 12 percent.”
It noted that gas prices have increased LL7,500 in 16 weeks and they have now reached LL40,000.
The consequent rise in food products has also created a further financial burden on consumers, it added.
The GLC therefore demanded that the government assume its responsibilities regarding the rise in the cost of living in Lebanon that is negatively affecting workers in various fields of the public sector.
