Politicians and religious leaders of different affiliations gathered Saturday to pay their respects to the late head of the Druze spiritual authority Sheikh Abu Mohammed Jawad Walieddine.
The funeral of Sheikh Walieddine, who died Friday at age of 96 of natural causes, was held in the Chouf town of Baaqlin, southeast Beirut.
Druze Sheikh al-Aql Naim Hasan led mourners who poured to the town.
President Michel Suleiman’s representative Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, Speaker Nabih Berri’s representative MP Ghazi Zoaiter, Prime Minister Najib Miqati representative Information Minister Walid al-Daouq, Phalange Party leader Amine Gemayel, ex-PM Saad Hariri’s representative MP Mohammed al-Hajjar, a delegation from Dar al-Fatwa, Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Rokn Abad and a several lawmakers were present at the funeral.
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat, Lebanese Democratic Party leader MP Talal Arslan, Ministers Ghazi al-Aridi, Wael Abu Faour, and Alaa Eddine Terro, MPs Akram Shehayeb and Marwan Hamadeh and head of the Tawhid movement Wiam Wahhab were among those who were receiving condolences.
Condolences can be offered in the residence of Waleiddine in Baaqlin from Sunday April 19 until March 6, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
