Suleiman Lashes Out at Aoun for Refusing New Consensus President
President Michel Suleiman lashed out on Saturday at Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun for refusing to elect a new consensus president.
Aoun said earlier in a live Twitter and Facebook session that experience “doesn’t encourage” accepting this compromise again.
Suleiman later slammed via twitter the FPM leader’s comments, saying: "At least everyone asks a consensus president to accept the post and he doesn’t need to beg for presidency."
Aoun during the live session urged that the president should have a parliamentary bloc “that would impose its presence.”
He voiced his support for the adoption of an electoral law based on proportional representation.
Interior Minister Marwan Charbel had proposed recently an electoral law based on proportional representation to be adopted in the 2013 parliamentary polls.
The proposition had sparked controversy among the rival political parties, as Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat reportedly rejected the proposal while the March 8 forces have voiced their support for it.
However, the March 14-led opposition has maintained its commitment to the amended 1960 law that was adopted during the 2009 parliamentary elections.
Aoun said that women should be able to exert the need efforts in order to reach the positions she aims at.
“If the legal differences between the women and men were not deleted, then women should have 50 percent quota at the parliament,” he added.
Aoun noted that the Lebanese women, who are married to foreigners, should be able to pass the citizenship to their children.
The Lebanese citizenship is transmitted by law through the father, who has the right to pass the citizenship to his children and foreign wives.
Concerning the Lebanese army’s interception of three containers of weapons destined for Syria on board of a ship originating from Libya, the FPM leader said that it indicates the western-local Lebanese alliance against Syria.
The cargo of the ship contained heavy machineguns, artillery shells, rockets, rocket launchers and other explosives as the 11 members of the crew were arrested pending investigation by a military judge.
Aoun said that the Syrian crisis could affect Lebanon.
He urged officials to act responsibly and take the “necessary measures” in order to preserve Lebanon.
