Jumblat Describes Elections as 'War of Abolition,' Rejects Attempts of Elimination
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stressed that the upcoming 2013 parliamentary elections will be an opportunity to maintain the sovereign path in Lebanon, rejecting any attempts of elimination through the adoption of a new electoral law.
“We are confronting elections that are similar to a war of abolition but we won’t allow anyone to eliminate us,” Jumblat said on the phone during a dinner held by the PSP in California.
He had continuously voiced his rejection to adopting an electoral law based on proportional representation amid the absence of a reform package that includes the modernization of several institutions.
He noted that the decision to enter an alliance with the March 8 forces was to “protect stability in Lebanon.”
“We refuse to become a supplement to those who want to control Lebanon’s security, sovereignty, independence and we will prevent anyone from erasing the accomplishments of the Cedar Revolution,” the Druze leader stated.
Concerning the arms of Hizbullah, Jumblat said that the matter is negotiable as long as it wouldn’t be used against the Lebanese “according to our agreement with Hizbullah.”
“The arms would have to be handed over at the right time,” he added.
On the crisis in Syria, the PSP leader pointed out that the “Syrian people will eventually triumph.”
“The Arab Spring proved that the people are stronger than the repressive regimes,” Jumblat said.
He voiced his concern over the lack of support by the international community to the Syrians.
Jumblat became a firm critic of Syrian President Bashar Assad, slamming his crackdown against anti-regime protests which began on March 2011.
