Higher Judicial Council Gets 2 New Judges

Members of Lebanon’s Court of Cassation elected two judges Tuesday to the Higher Judicial Council which is the subject of a controversy since its head Judge Ghaleb Ghanem retired in January last year.

Judges Antoine Daher and Suhair Harakeh were elected out of four candidates who ran for the posts.

The position of the head of the HJC remains vacant over a dispute between President Michel Suleiman and Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun.

The cabinet has so far failed to make an appointment to the top post given the lack of consensus.

Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi held a press conference at the court of cassation later in the day to congratulate the judges and make several announcements.

He revealed that a new judicial law has been drafted and amendments have been introduced to another existing law.

“Among the suggestions made are the increase in the judiciary’s independence,” Qortbawi said, adding “this is not just a right but a responsibility.”
