Faisal al-Moqdad: Whoever Antagonizes Syria in Lebanon Will Lose

Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Moqdad on Wednesday said his country was suffering “attacks by terrorist groups across the Lebanese border,” adding that “Lebanese parties are supporting these terrorists.”

“The Lebanese supporters of these terrorist groups are well-known and we have documented and precise information in this regard,” Moqdad said in an interview with al-Manar television.

The Syrian diplomat called on the Lebanese “not to allow these terrorists to practice their acts” in Lebanon, urging “all sides to abide by the policy of good neighborliness and not to be in the service of the Gulf states’ agenda.”

“Whoever antagonizes Syria in Lebanon will not win, we will rather lose together,” Moqdad added.

Commenting on the latest deadly unrest in the northern city of Tripoli, Moqdad denied any Syrian involvement in spurring the violence, describing accusations in this regard as totally baseless.

Battles erupted on Saturday between residents of the rival Tripoli neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen when General Security agents arrested Shadi al-Mawlawi, a Salafist, on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization.

Mawlawi's supporters say he was targeted because of his help for Syrian refugees fleeing to Lebanon.
