Bomb Scare at Airport as 1 Dead, 2 Hurt in Jdeideh Shooting

A bomb scare was reported at the Beirut international airport on Wednesday after a traveler left his luggage in the facility.

Airport security inspected the luggage, which was left at a ticketing window, and found that it only contained personal belongings.

The owner of the luggage turned out to be a Nigerian national who was travelling to Dubai.

Investigations are underway with him to determine the details of the incident.

Later on Wednesday, unidentified assailants shot and wounded three people in the vicinity of Sagesse School in Jdeideh.

Elie Joseph Numan later succumbed to his wounds at Saint Joseph Hospital in Dora.

State-run National News Agency identified the two wounded men as Bernard Numan, Elie's brother, and Syrian employee Tony Nehme.

The shooting was a result of a personal dispute at a motorcycle repair shop, said NNA.

“Four individuals – B. Nehme, E. Semaan, M. Tantawi (Egyptian national) and A. Nammour -- got out of a Grand Cherokee SUV and entered a shop belonging to the Numan family and a dispute ensued over the repair of a motorcycle belonging to Tantawi. The dispute then erupted into a fistfight before Nehme opened fire at the shop’s owners,” NNA said.

Later on Wednesday, army intelligence agents from the Metn department managed to arrest Nehme and Tantawi and were still pursuing Nammour and Semaan, the agency added.
