Report: March 14 Laid Mechanism to Topple Govt. during Last Meeting
The March 14 forces’ meeting on Thursday laid the mechanism to topple Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s government, reported the Kuwaiti al-Anba newspaper on Saturday.
It said that they devised the practical and democratic measures needed to be taken at parliament and in the street in order to reach this goal.
An agreement was reached to refrain from announcing the details of the plan until the time is right and in order to “keep the element of surprise,” it added.
According to a leading March 14 figure, Thursday’s meeting was significant over the participation of former Defense Minister Elias al-Murr, who had never previously taken part in meetings by the political camp.
“The regional and international circumstances are appropriate to topple the government,” stated the unnamed March 14 official.
Forcing Miqati to resign is no longer an improbable possibility in light of recent local developments, especially Saudi King Abdullah’s cable to President Michel Suleiman urging him to resume national dialogue among the Lebanese factions, he said.
He denied allegations that the cable included an order by the monarch to overthrow the Miqati government.
A civil war will erupt in Lebanon should the government remain in power, he warned.
The March 14 forces on Thursday called for forming a “neutral, salvation government,” revealing that they will “very soon submit an initiative” to Suleiman that is “aimed at confronting the attempt to ruin Lebanon.”
“The Syrian regime wants to destroy the temple over everyone's heads and it is depicting Lebanon as an incubator of terrorism,” said a statement recited by former premier Fouad Saniora following an emergency meeting for the March 14 forces at the Center House in downtown Beirut.
“If the state's resignation from its duties in 1975 had led to a war that lasted several years, it is today urged not repeat the bitter experience,” March 14 said.
