Wahhab Describes his Statements as Slip of the Tongue: I Didn’t Mean to Offend Saudi Woman

Tawheed Movement leader Wiam Wahhab stressed on Wednesday that his statements on the Saudi woman were “a slip of the tongue.”

He added during a press conference: “I didn’t mean to offend anyone.”

“If it weren’t for the Palestinian, Lebanese, and Iraqi woman, we wouldn’t have martyrs or know what martyrdom is,” he continued.

“The woman is part of society and I have visited Saudi Arabia and Iran,” he said.

“The veiled Iranian woman goes on about her daily life in a normal fashion, while in Saudi Arabia, the veil prevents her from becoming an object,” he said.

Wahhab noted: “Saudi Arabia has ruined Muslims and Islam.”

He also questioned the Mustaqbal movement campaign against him after his statements, calling on it to concern itself with Muslim issues “instead of those aimed at creating strife in Lebanon.”

“I apologize if I made a mistake and I bow before every veiled woman who has lifted our heads up high in the Arab world,” he stressed.

Last week, Wahhab derided Saudi Arabia for dressing its women in "trash bags," an allusion to the black niqab, in an interview on OTV.

Hundreds of angry protesters took to the streets in the northern city of Tripoli Tuesday, burning tires and blocking roads in protest against his remarks.

Around 500 protesters gathered and chanted "There is no God but God" and "Wiam, you pig; you should be chained down."

Tripoli is Lebanon's second-largest city and is considered the stronghold of the country's Sunni Muslim community, which is the majority in Saudi Arabia.
