Arab Democratic Party: 2 Farmers Abducted in Abboudiyeh to be Freed Shortly

Secretary-General of the Arab Democratic Party Rifaat Eid said Saturday that two Lebanese farmers, who were kidnapped by Syrian forces in al-Abboudiyeh earlier this week, will be released soon.

“Mohammed Yassine al-Merehbi and Mehdi Hamdan will be in Lebanon in the next few hours,” he said after his party mediated for their release.

Eid made the announcement during a press conference he held at his office in the northern city of Tripoli as bursts of gunfire were heard in the background.

Clashes between the Tripoli neighborhood of mainly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and majority Alawite Jabal Mohsen renewed overnight Saturday leaving at least one person dead.

Eid accused the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Branch of using sniper rifles equipped with night vision goggles in the Tripoli battles.

He also said that authorities have the list of names of those involved in the clashes that include Inerga-type rockets, Rocket Propelled Grenades and machineguns.

Several of them are “backed by some politicians and security officials,” he said.
