A reconciliation was reached on Monday between the former head of the Palestinian Armed Struggle, Mahmoud Issa, who goes by the nom de guerre of al-Lino, and the former leader of Fatah in Lebanon Munir al-Maqdah, reported As Safir on Tuesday.
The tense security situation in Lebanon was the main driving force for the reconciliation, revealed Palestinian sources to the newspaper.
The reconciliation was held in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh in southern Lebanon under the sponsorship of Fatah military commander in Lebanon Sobhi Abu Arab.
The sources added that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had intervened a number of times in order to ensure the success of the reconciliation.
The various suspicions against Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon of harboring wanted gunmen has also been a contributing factor in pushing forward the agreement between al-Lino and Maqdah, said As Safir.
“The reconciliation has ended the constant tensions that had pervaded Ain el-Hilweh,” stressed the sources.
Abu Arab told the newspaper: “The refugee camps cannot support further tensions and the situation in Lebanon is very sensitive and complicated.”
“It is not in our interest to create any internal disputes. We must fortify our internal scene to face any possible confrontation we may be made to wage,” he stated.
As Safir reported that the various barricades set up by Fatah throughout the camp over the past few years may be removed on Friday.
Tensions had been high between al-Lino and Maqdah with the latter accusing the former of being behind the assassination of a number of Palestinian Armed Struggle members.
