Tripoli and the North Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar urged on Tuesday the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen to reconcile and resolve disputes among each other.
“The two sides should cooperate and find consensus in an attempt to remove all the obstacles between the two neighbors,” Shaar said after holding talks with Prime Minister Najib Miqati at the Grand Serail.
He revealed that the premier tasked him to prepare a plan to seek consensus among the mostly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and mainly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen.
He urged the two parties to stop bickering among each other.
Shaar hailed the premier’s efforts to restore calm in Tripoli, stressing the importance of fortifying stability in the city.
He hoped that the Lebanese would live in security and stability.
According to Voice of Lebanon Radio (93.3), the mufti also met with President Michel Suleiman at the Baabda Palace.
The northern city of Tripoli witnessed fierce clashes between Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh leaving 14 people dead over the weekend.
Sectarian violence has flared several times in Tripoli since the revolt broke out in neighboring Syria in March last year.
