Plumbly Meets Fneish, Calls for ‘More Lasting Solutions to the Problems in Tripoli’

United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly expressed Wednesday his concern of the security situation in the northern city of Tripoli, urging for “more lasting solutions” to end the clashes.

Following his meeting with Minister of Administrative Development Mohammed Fneish, Plumbly said: “I would like to express my concern over what happened last weekend in Tripoli and our appreciation speaking for the United Nations, for the efforts of the security authorities to control the situation there.”

“We also to look forward to more lasting solutions to the problems in the city” he said.

Clashes renewed last week between Bab Al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen rival neighborhoods, as the Lebanese army and security forces deployed to separate fighters and stop the violence.

Separately, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon discussed issues which concern the south of Lebanon in particular and the implementation of U.N. resolutions, pointing out that “these are matters of great concern to us, particularly to the United Nations and of course to me in my present role”.

Plumbly expressed his sympathy for the families of the Lebanese citizens abducted in Syria, hoping that “these people will be back home soon.”

“We will follow this issue very closely, and will stay in close touch with the Lebanese authorities on it”.
