Clinton Unimpressed by Russia's Plan for Syria Meeting

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday she would reserve judgment on a Russian proposal for a global conference on Syria that would include Iran together with other powers.

"It's hard to imagine inviting a country (Iran) that is stage managing the Assad regime's assault on its people," she said at the end of a visit to Azerbaijan, referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Speaking in Beijing earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for a new international meeting on Syria with all states that could influence the situation in Syria, notably including Turkey and Iran.

"We think it is necessary to call a meeting of countries that truly have an influence on various opposition groups," Lavrov said, citing the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, the Arab League, the European Union, Turkey and Iran.
