Head of Akkar Town Municipality Released after Two-Day Arrest in Syria

The head of al-Rama border town municipality in the northern Wadi Khaled area of Akkar, Khaled Souaidan, was released after being detained by the Syrian intelligence, the National News Agency reported on Friday.

According to the news agency, Souaidan was released overnight after being arrested for two days in the neighboring country Syria.

Souaidan had entered Syria on Wednesday through the General Security checkpoint, which led to his arrest by Syrian intelligence officers for questioning.

Media reports said that Souaidan, known as al-Badawi, owns a factory in Syria and enters the country regularly.

Al-Rama is one of the largest towns of Wadi Khaled and has a high concentration of Syrian refugees who have escaped the violence in their country.

An estimated 24,000 Syrians have sought refuge in Lebanon, mostly in Wadi Khaled, after President Bashar Assad began using force to crush a popular uprising that erupted in March 2011.
