Vandals Trash Cars at Arab-Jewish 'Peace Oasis'

Vandals overnight slashed car tires and sprayed graffiti at a mixed Arab-Jewish community west of Jerusalem in an attack which bore the hallmarks of an act of settler revenge.

An Agence France Presse journalist said cars in the village of Neve Shalom/Wahat al Salam or Oasis of Peace were sprayed with slogans including "Death to the Arabs" and "Revenge" in Hebrew.

Police said that "Regards from Ulpana" -- a reference to a West Bank settlement outpost which the Israeli Supreme Court has ordered to be cleared by July 1 -- was also daubed on a vehicle.

On Wednesday, MPs rejected a bill to prevent the razing of Ulpana's five illegal buildings, angering settlers and their supporters.

"We are looking in all directions, but obviously there's one direction that is growing stronger," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told Agence France Presse when asked if settlers were suspected.

Jewish extremists have declared a policy they call "Price tag," in which they have attacked mainly Arabs and their property in response to Israeli government action against settlements in the West Bank.

In some cases, extremists have also vandalized army installations and the property of Israeli anti-settlement activists.
