Geagea Slams Govt. for Not Tackling Security Incidents, Says Dialogue Futile
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Sunday described the national dialogue conference that will be held on Monday at the Baabda Palace as a “waste of time,” noting that “dialogue is a trap because the current government is responsible for this bad situation.”
Earlier this week, the LF announced that it will not take part in the talks despite the participation of its allies in the March 14 camp.
“The government should have addressed the problems immediately instead of taking the Lebanese to a dialogue table aimed at wasting time,” Geagea said in an interview on al-Jadeed television on the eve of the national dialogue that is scheduled to be held at Baabda palace under President Michel Suleiman.
“Not taking part in dialogue does not mean we're boycotting dialogue, but rather that we believe there won't be a real dialogue,” Geagea clarified.
“Has Hizbullah changed its viewpoint on the problem the dialogue table is supposed to discuss so that we go to dialogue?” Geagea said of Hizbullah’s controversial arsenal of weapons.
The LF leader stressed that the Syrian regime and Hizbullah are not willing to sit around the dialogue table.
Geagea slammed the government, noting that “people are still in possession of arms in Tripoli and security forces are intervening upon any clash in a manner similar to U.N. peacekeepers, through contacting parties in order to stop the conflict and reach a ceasefire.”
He said the government must meet and “give a direct, clear order to the army to enter Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh and disarm the citizens there and we will all throw our support behind it.”
“This government is the worst in Lebanon's history and had March 14 been in charge of government, at least the problems of Tripoli and the Lebanese-Syrian border would have been decisively resolved,” Geagea noted.
Answering a question, the LF leader said he did not have concerns regarding a possible return to an “all-out civil war.”
“But I am confident that the country is suffering a state of corrosion,” he cautioned, in reference to the latest security incidents in the country.
