Phalange: National Dialogue Must Pave Way to Restoring State’s Authority in Security Affairs

The Phalange Party hailed on Monday the resumption of the national dialogue, hoping that the “reconciliatory atmosphere it created will have a positive effect on the tense situation on the ground.”

It hoped in a statement after its weekly politburo statement that the dialogue would be “employed in achieving a reconciliatory atmosphere with the state through recognizing its authority in the political, security, and military fields.”

Addressing the recent tensions in Tripoli, Akkar, and Arsal, it demanded that the “political powers would turn their attention to these areas” through urging the state against “relinquishing its role in protecting the border.”

“The state should guarantee the safety of the people and grant the army and security forces the greatest authority in containing the situation,” it added.

On this note, the Phalange Party condemned the various violations that have taken place across the Lebanese-Syrian border and which have targeted Lebanese citizens “in a manner reminiscent of the incidents that used to take place during the Lebanese civil war.”

A number of Lebanese citizens had been kidnapped and released in recent months by Syrian forces.

The incidents erupted in light of the eruption of anti-regime protests in Syria in March 2011.

Syrian refugees have since flooded northern Lebanon, seeking refuge from the regime’s crackdown against protesters.
