Mustaqbal Warns Palestinians against Syrian Schemes to Drag Refugee Camps into Conflict in Lebanon
The Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc stressed on Wednesday the strong fraternal ties between the Lebanese and Palestinian people, urging the need to bolster them.
It warned “the Palestinians against falling victim to the traps of the Syrian regime aimed at dragging refugee camps and their residents to a confrontation with their brothers in Lebanon.”
The bloc emphasized its commitment to the army’s national role in maintaining the peace.
It made its remarks in a statement after its weekly meeting headed by MP Fouad Saniora.
Clashes erupted on Friday between the residents of the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp and the Lebanese army over the death of Ahmed Qassem, a Palestinian national, during a clash at an army checkpoint.
Fighting erupted again on Monday between the army and refugees during Qassem’s funeral, leaving one dead and several wounded.
Addressing the recent power outages in Lebanon, the Mustaqbal bloc blamed the problem on the ministers of the Free Patriotic Movement “seeing as they have been in control of the energy sector for the past four years.”
It added that Energy Minister Jebran Bassil is “too busy pursuing vengeful and spiteful practices and striking suspicious deals” to cater to the frequent power cuts.
It attributed the current deteriorating situation to the “paralysis of the government and worrisome loss of the state’s authority.”
This paralysis has been caused by the internal disputes among ministers, “which have created chaos in Lebanon where citizens have resorted to solving their problems themselves due to the absence of the state.”
Furthermore, the Mustaqbal bloc warned that the current “chaos” may also allow “saboteurs from exploiting the current situation to create division and strife in Lebanon.”
The parliamentary bloc also addressed recent reports that Saniora is the latest target on an assassinations list against Lebanese figures.
It said that the former premier informed the gatherers of the details of the reports and the security warnings that he received on this matter.
Informed sources informed him of security preparations to assassinate him along with a number of political and religious figures from the North and other regions in Lebanon, said the Mustaqbal statement.
The daily An Nahar reported on Sunday that Saniora had received warnings from regional and western powers urging him to be wary of plots to assassinate him, revealing that these plans are linked to regional developments.
Speaker Nabih Berri was the first speak of an assassination list in Lebanon.
He said on May 31 that the targets are facing a “serious threat from extremist forces.”
Lebanese authorities received warnings from a number of countries saying that fundamentalist forces had infiltrated Lebanon to assassinate a number of Lebanese figures.
In April, Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea was the victim of a failed assassination attempt at his Maarab residence.
Phalange Party MP Sami Gemayel had also recently revealed that he too was victim of a failed attempt on his life.
