Jumblat Holds FPM Directly Responsible for Energy Crisis in Lebanon
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused the Free Patriotic Movement of being responsible for the deteriorating electricity situation in Lebanon, reported As Safir newspaper on Thursday.
He told As Safir: “The FPM does not want to benefit from Arab funds and it does not want to grant the private sector a role in tackling this sector.”
“The Movement therefore should be held directly responsible for the current energy crisis,” he added.
“Enough with excuses, let the brother-in-law of the FPM (Energy Minister Jebran Bassil) assume his responsibilities,” declared Jumblat.
Frequent power cuts have been witnessed in Lebanon over the past week, with citizens venting their frustrations through blocking roads in various regions across the country.
Widely-informed sources from the parliamentary majority told As Safir that the street actions are “suspicious,” adding that some powers “are riding the popular wave of discontent to achieve political goals.”
“The government is therefore required to quickly contain the energy crisis,” noted the sources.
The head of the head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea had accused Bassil on Wednesday of being responsible for the current crisis, demanding that he resign “if he is incapable of handling it.”
Speaker Nabih Berri had also voiced his disappointment in the electricity crisis, revealing on Wednesday that a “decisive position” on the matter will be taken during a cabinet session on June 27.
