Annan, Mood to Hold Press Conference in Geneva Friday

U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan will hold a press conference with the head of the U.N. mission in Syria Robert Mood in Geneva on Friday, the United Nations said.

The conference follows the weekend suspension of patrols by the 300-strong observer team amid intensifying violence.

Major General Mood told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that the monitors were "morally obliged" to stay in Syria after being deployed under the Annan-brokered peace plan.

This is despite UNSMIS (U.N. Supervision Mission in Syria) vehicles coming under direct fire 10 times.

The mission's current mandate ends on July 20.

The Swiss may also host an international conference on Syria being organized by Annan.

Earlier in the week French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said that a meeting could take place in Geneva on June 30 but this has yet to be confirmed by Annan's team.
