The army denied that there is a decision to boost its presence in Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp though it witnessed security unrest recently, As Safir newspaper reported on Friday.
“The army will boost its security measures near Ain el-Hilweh only during extraordinary situations and maximum necessity,” a military source told the daily.
The source pointed out the implementation of strict security measures will only take place in case of a “security incident, arms smuggling or pursuing wanted people.”
Regarding the strict security measures in the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp, the source revealed that the recent situation in the area forces these tight procedures.
According to As Safir, the army and Palestinian factions agreed on cancelling the entrance passes for the people who are above 60.
The daily reported that the army will also halt its patrols in the neighborhoods of Nahr al-Bared and will replace the entrance passes with mechanized procedures that allow registering the names of those who are entering and leaving the refugee camp in a maximum period of two weeks.
At least three Palestinians were killed and several people, including three Lebanese soldiers, were wounded in clashes that erupted between the Lebanese army and residents of the Palestinian refugee camps of Nahr al-Bared and Ain el-Hilweh.
