Miqati Admits Lax Security: Everything Has a Limit

Prime Minister Najib Miqati admitted on Thursday that the security forces had adopted a lax approach in controlling the situation on the ground on Lebanon.

He said: “We had presented ample time for a calm and positive approach in this matter, but everything has a limit.”

“This approach cannot continue,” he declared before a delegation of Economic Committees headed by former minister Adnan Qassar.

He stated that the cabinet on Wednesday stressed the need for the security authorities to perform their duties “fully and firmly.”

“The situation in the region is very difficult and we are trying to limit the damage it is incurring on Lebanon,” continued Miqati.

Addressing the economic situation in the country, he told the delegation that the government will not approve a tax that would burden the economic sector.

Given the current situation, an ill-conceived tax cannot be imposed because it will create more harm than good, noted the premier.

In addition, he revealed that an agreement was reached during the cabinet session to speed up the approval of the state budget “in order to restore financial affairs in Lebanon back to normal.”

“We will take all the necessary measures to ensure calm in Lebanon because the economy cannot prosper without stability,” stressed Miqati.

Lebanon has been without a state budget since 2005.

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel on Wednesday launched a one-month security plan aimed at restoring stability in Lebanon.

Speaking to reporters in al-Musharrafieh area in Beirut’s southern suburbs, Charbel reassured that the security situation would be “excellent” during the one-month plan.

“We hope that the one-month security plan will be implemented throughout the year,” he added.
